This can be anything from a school's Himalayan expedition to abseiling from the roof of the science block. It is becoming increasingly popular in schools - both co-educational and single sex - and is usually offered as part of a national programme in which the schools participate eg CCF, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, the Scouts or Outward Bound. More rarely, it is also offered as part of a local emergency service such as local fire or coast guard service.
