What it's like
Founded in 1933, it is single-site on the edge of the green belt in pleasant surroundings. The buildings are varied and attractive and are mainly purpose-built. A sports hall has been added and, most recently, a building housing music, art, maths, food technology and a modern recording studio. A sound general education is provided and examination results are good. A high proportion of the girls are involved in music, drama and art. There is a range of games and sports and other activities. Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme offered.
Pupils & entrance
Pupils: Total age range 3-18, 400 day girls. Senior department 11-18. Entrance: Main entry ages 3, 4, 11 and 16. Own entrance exam used. No special skills or religious requirements. State school entry, 20% senior intake.

Head & staff
Headmistress: Mrs Pat Wood, in post from 1990. Educated at the Convent of the Ladies of Mary, Scarborough, and Hull University (geography). Previously Head of Geography and House Tutor at Queenswood and taught at Shelley High, Huddersfield, and Stocksbridge School, Sheffield. Also Examiner and Team Leader for MEG Geography. Teaching staff: Annual turnover 5%.
Exam results
GCSE: 40 pupils in Year 11: 83% gained grade C or above in 8+ subjects; 12% in 5-7 subjects. Average GCSE score 57 (55 over 5 years). A-levels: 22 in upper sixth: 9% passed in 4+ subjects; 86% in 3; 5% in 2 subjects. Average final point score achieved by upper sixth formers 290.
University & college entrance
100% of sixth-form leavers go on to a degree course. 36% take courses in science and engineering, 37% in English, humanities and social sciences, 5% in modern foreign languages, 22% in creative arts.
Curriculum
GCSE, AS and A-levels. 21 AS/A-level subjects (including photography). Sixth form: Most sixth formers take 4 subjects at AS-level, 3 at A-level. 38% take science A-levels; 40% arts/humanities; 16% music and creative arts. Vocational: Work experience available. Special provision: EFL lessons. Languages: French (compulsory), German and Spanish offered at GCSE, AS and A-level; Italian to GCSE. Regular exchanges (France, Germany and Spain). ICT: Taught as a discrete subject. 104 computers for pupil use (open all day), most with email and internet access; interactive whiteboards.
The arts
Music: Over 50% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams can be taken. Some 7 musical groups including choirs, string, orchestral, recorder, big band. Drama: Drama offered. GCSE, AS and A-level drama. Majority of pupils are involved in school and house/other productions and local crime prevention work. Recent successes in creative writing competitions. Art and design: On average, 12 take GCSE, 4 A-level. Textiles and photography also offered (some 12 and 20 respectively take GCSE, 5 and 10 take A-level).
Sports & activities
Sport: Netball, rounders, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, dance, health related fitness, trampolining, badminton, volleyball, basketball, judo, cricket offered. Choice of sports in Year 11 also includes self-defence, aerobics, skating, bowling. ASA, and gymnastics awards may be taken in junior school, and sports leadership in the sixth form. National and county judo squad; U14, U16 and U18 Surrey players (netball). Activities: Pupils take bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Up to 15 clubs, eg drama, computers, sports, chess, music.
School life
Uniform: School uniform worn, suits in sixth form. Houses and prefects: Competitive houses. Prefects, head girl, head of house and house prefects, elected by the school. School Council. Religion: Non-denominational. Social: Local community involvement. Many organised trips abroad. Meals self-service. Sixth form have facilities to provide own lunch. No illegal substances or tobacco or alcohol allowed.
