Bedford High

What it's like
Opened in 1882 as a sister school to Bedford School, it is in the centre of Bedford and has 21 acres of playing fields. The boarding houses (one for sixth formers) are in a quiet area, a short distance from the school and town centre. The original Victorian buildings have been extended and current developments include a sports hall, swimming pool and theatre. Non-denominational Christian values of caring, understanding and respect for others are fundamental to the ethos of the school. Pupils come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Academic standards are high and examination results are excellent. The International Baccalaureate is now offered in addition to AS and A-level courses. A wide range of subjects is offered, from traditional disciplines including Latin and Greek, to music technology and ICT skills. Science and languages are particular strengths. There is a strong commitment to the expressive arts including dance. Sports and games are well catered for (including trampolining and golf) and pupils play for county and regional teams; it is recognised as a top rowing school (the boathouse is shared with other Harpur Trust schools). Numerous clubs and activities cater for most needs and there is keen participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Many activities, eg debating, music and drama are joint with Bedford School.
